Main Menu and Toolbar
The main menu provides access to many functions that are not available
inside the main program area. The toolbar provides quick access to
some of these menu functions. If a menu choice or toolbar button is
greyed out, this means that the function is unnecessary and, therefore,
unavailable. If a key combination is given in parentheses (e.g. Alt+N),
this means that you can hold down the 'Alt' key and press the 'n' key to
cause that action to take place. Below is a screenshot of the main menu
and toolbar:
New Meal (Ctrl+N): If you are not currently editing a meal, then
you can create a new meal by choosing this option. When you select
this, you will be prompted for the name of your new meal.
Delete Meal (Ctrl+D): Choose this to delete the meal you currently
have selected in the Meal Control tab. You
will be asked to confirm this action as it cannot be undone after
you do so. This option is only available if the Meal
Control tab is selected and if you are not editing a meal.
Print Meal (Ctrl+P): By clicking this, you can print out the meal
you have selected in the Meal Control tab.
You can only print the selected meal if you are not currently
editing it. This is to ensure that you print out the latest saved
version of your meal. This option is only available if the
Meal Control tab is selected and if
you are not editing a meal.
Check Ingredients (Ctrl+K): This will do a clean-up of
your ingredients. It reports if you have ingredients which
are not used in any meals or if you have ingredients which are
specified in a meal, but aren't in your
Ingredients List. You will
have the option to correct these problems. You should run this
periodically to make sure your ingredients are up-to-date with
your meals.
Import Meals (Ctrl+F1): Choose this if you would like to import
meals from one or more Discover-a-Dish (.ddf) files and incorporate them
into your meals list. If the meal you are importing is in a category
which is not in your list on the Category Control
tab, you will be prompted to file it in another location or to add the
category. If an imported meal has ingredients not in your
Ingredients List, they will
be added.
Export Meals (Ctrl+F2): This will prompt you to select which meals
you would like to export and which file you would like to export
them to. You can export meals in Discover-a-Dish (.ddf) format or
in HTML. Disocver-a-Dish (.ddf) files produced from this can then be saved to disk
for backup purposes or sent to a friend where it can then be
imported. HTML files can be used to create your own web page of
recipes.
Quit (Ctrl+Q): This saves your categories and ingredients and
exits Discover-a-Dish. If you are currently editing a meal, you
will be asked if you would like to save the meal before exiting.
Undo (Ctrl+Z): Select this to undo the last changes you made
to any text entry or text box. If you keep selecting this, it
will continue to undo changes in the reverse order that the changes
originally happened.
Redo (Ctrl+Y): Select this to redo any accidentally undone
changes to text entries or text boxes. If you keep selecting this,
it will continue to redo changes in the reverse order that the
changes were originally undone.
Cut (Ctrl+X): Removes the currently selected text in a text
entry or text box and copies it into the clipboard.
Copy (Ctrl+C): Copies the currently selected text in a text
entry or text box into the clipboard.
Paste (Ctrl+V): Pastes the text in the clipboard to
the text entry or text box that is being edited.
Edit Meal (Ctrl+E): Allows you to edit the currently selected
meal in the Meal Control tab. This is
only available if the Meal Control tab
is selected and if you are not currently editing another meal.
Save Meal (Ctrl+S): Saves the changes you have made to the
meal you are currently editing. This is only available if the
Meal Control tab is selected and
you are editing a meal.
Cancel Changes (Ctrl+A): Cancels the changes you have made to
the meal you are currently editing. If it is a new meal, it deletes
the meal. This is only available if the Meal
Control tab is selected and you are editing a meal.
Bold (Ctrl+B): If the currently selected text is not
bolded, it becomes bolded. Otherwise it is unbolded.
Italic (Ctrl+I): If the currently selected text is
not italicized, it becomes italicized. Otherwise, it is
unitalicized.
Underline (Ctrl+U): If the currently selected text is
not underlined, it becomes underlined. Otherwise, it becomes
not underlined.
Left (Ctrl+L): Left-aligns the current paragraph.
Center (Ctrl+C): Centers the current paragraph.
Right (Ctrl+R): Right-aligns the current paragraph.
Justify (Ctrl+J): Justifies the current paragraph.
Color (Ctrl+O): Opens a color selection dialog so that
you can either select the color you want to type with or select
the color you wish to change the currently highlighted text to.
Documentation (F1): Opens up the viewer for the
Discover-a-Dish Help Documentation.
Getting Started (F2): Opens up a dialog window which explains
how to begin using Discover-a-Dish. This appears automatically
the first time you start Discover-a-Dish. This continues to appear
each time you start the program until you uncheck the window's
option box.
What's This? (Shift+F1) Changes your cursor into an
arrow with a question mark beside it. Then, if you click on an
item in the main window, you will be given some information about
that item. This must be re-selected each time you want to click
on another item and receive information about it.
About... (Shift+F2) Opens a dialog window with version,
copyright, and license information for Discover-a-Dish.
Toolbar
The Main Toolbar contains buttons for frequently used actions so that you
don't have to go through the menus each time you wish to use the
option. Simply click on the corresponding button on the toolbar to
cause the action to happen. The dotted vertical bar on the left is
called the Control Bar. Click on this to minimize the toolbar
so it is not visible. You can get it back by clicking on the Control Bar
again. If you click the Control Bar and drag the mouse around, you
can place the toolbar at the bottom or sides of the Discover-a-Dish
screen. Also, if you pull it outside the Discover-a-Dish screen or
double-click the Control Bar, the toolbar will act as a separate
window. Double-click the title of the separated toolbar or drag
it back to the main screen to have it reattach.
